Gavels against Pens

This publication, a collaboration between civil society organizations JAM e.V. (the Association of Journalists and Lawyers for Freedom of Expression) and the MMDC (Mass Media Defense Center), demonstrates in detail the playbook of autocrats, meticulously scrutinizing escalating hostilities and judicial assaults against journalists over the last two decades in both Russia and Turkey, largely orchestrated by their respective political regimes. In this publication, you can find comprehensive reports of some cases, which fall under the definition of SLAPPs (Strategic Lawsuits against Public Participation) from both countries. The cases show examples such as reporting on the war, framing journalists as terrorists, alleged insulting of public officials, and journalists facing financial ruin because of their reporting on cases of corruption.

When the first Poems of Liberty edition was launched exactly a year ago to celebrate the International Human Rights Day the aim was to feature well known or interesting poems that illustrate the importance of human rights, and warn of the dangers of neglecting them.
After three more succesful editions, we are back for International Human Rights Day, but this time with a new generation of poets, reflecting on the issues of the world today. More than 30 submissions across 4 continents and 3 categories have reached us, and we selected 7 of them for this publication. As always, the poems and commentaries are accompanied by comics by one of our Animate Europe artists.
Explore current pressing issues around press freedom, diversity, democracy and disinformation and who knows, maybe you will be inspired to join the poetic community as well!

A Decade of the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration

Efforts to establish a human rights mechanism in Southeast Asia led to the establishing of a human rights body, the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR). The AICHR drafted the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration 2012 (AHRD). The Declaration passed its tenth-year mark since its adoption by ten ASEAN member states. The AHRD drafting process was characterised by disagreements among governments, leading to a final document with diluted provisions falling well below international human rights standards. Thus far, the AHRD’s impact has proven to be limited, highlighting ASEAN's ongoing challenges in prioritising and addressing human rights concerns. Although the AHRD has served as a common framework for discussing human rights and facilitated some engagement, its limitations, combined with the weaknesses of the AICHR, have undermined its effectiveness in providing meaningful human rights protection to those who need it most.

This brief, authored by Edmund Bon Tai Soon and Umavathni Vathanaganthan, traces the development of human rights institutionalism in Southeast Asia and how the AHRD has (or has not) helped human rights gain a foothold in the lives and psyche of the people of Southeast Asia.
