The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom wish to express with deep sorrow the passing of Seif Shariff Hamad, Chairperson of ACT Wazalendo and the First Vice - President of Zanzibar Archipelago.
Mr. Hamad's contribution to the democratic process in Tanzania will be missed. He was an astute defender of human rights, political reforms and believed that the reconciliation process is key for national unity. Until his passing, he was in the process of building a cohesive and united Zanzibar through recognising and accommodating different voices, and rebuilding relationships.
Whereas we are saddened by his untimely death, we celebrate his life and his contributions to the democratic space in Tanzania.
Our sympathies go to his family, friends, the people of Zanzibar, ACT Wazalendo, and the United Republic of Tanzania.
